Primary industries

Southland is well suited to several types of land use due to its unique climate. Moderate rainfall spread across all seasons means there is high pasture growth and little need for prolonged irrigation through the summer months. Southland also has high sunshine hours and UV light, producing flowers that have particularly vibrant colours. The temperate climate means that animals are rarely stressed by extremes of heat or cold, and there are reduced impacts of insect pests, viruses and fungi.

Southland has demonstrated that it can develop and manipulate land use to the benefit of the economy as it changes and evolves. Southland’s history has predominantly been in sheep/beef and deer farming, but recent market changes have seen dramatic growth in dairy farming in the south. For further detail on each primary industry, follow the drop down links on the left.

Topoclimate South
The Topoclimate survey was initiated by Crops for Southland in 1998, to more precisely acquire information on the region’s climate and soils. The resulting maps and database of soil information continues to provide useful information for land users all over Southland, so that farmers and growers can use land appropriately, efficiently and sustainably. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and advanced computer technology allow information be gathered from a variety of sites and analysed quickly. Information documented through Topoclimate research has identified microclimates, which allow growers and farmers to grow a wider range of crops and pastures, which in turn improves diversification and reduces risk.
